Do you love cacti but fear the spikes? Opuntia ellisiana is the answer! Commonly called “Thornless Opuntia” or “Spineless Prickly Pear”, this perennial cactus has thick pads with only tiny, curved prickles. It is a spineless form of Opuntia cacanapa that was cultivated in South Texas.
Thornless Opuntia has cheerful, 4″ yellow flowers in June that are followed by attractive (non-edible) burgundy fruits in fall. This plant requires very well-draining soil and thrives in full sun. It is rabbit and deer-resistant.
Opuntia ellisiana Thornless Opuntia is a real novelty in mass plantings and in large containers. It’s sure to start conversations with anyone who sees it!
