These bright red flowers are among the reddest of the creeping Phlox. The rapidly spreading, needle-like evergreen foliage of Phlox subulata ‘Scarlet Flame’ becomes absolutely carpeted in these flowers each spring for months on end. It’s a huge hit with butterflies and hummingbirds!
Creeping Phlox, or Phlox subulata, is an adaptable plant that can grow in many soil types, along severe slopes, and in containers. It is tolerant of drought and coastal conditions, and resistant to deer. The one mandatory condition it must have to thrive is drainage. Plant ‘Scarlet Flame’ creeping Phlox in well-draining soil, or amend poorly-draining soil with sand, compost, or gravel before planting.
‘Scarlet Flame’ creeping Phlox is a cultivated variety of an eastern US native plant.
