Salvia greggii ‘Flame’ is a semi-woody perennial that blooms from spring to fall with a brief pause in the hot, dry periods in the summer. Loaded with brilliant red blossoms and accented by dark green foliage, this plant likes full sun and can take part shade.Â
Also known as ‘Texas Autumn Sage’ (native to parts of Texas), this plant is loved by butterflies and hummingbirds due to its nearly everblooming nature and abundance of blooms. It prefers average, moist to dry, well-drained soil. The scented foliage make it deer and rabbit resistant.Â
It is believed cutting back Salvia greggii ‘Flame’ hard in late May can promote better fall blooming. Otherwise, the plant should be cut back in late winter to allow new growth to be front and center come spring time.Â
