Commonly known as “American vervain,” Verbena hastata is a tall, slender perennial that displays panicles of purple flowers resembling fancy candelabras. It is native to much of the United States, and most densely inhabits the northern half of the country.
American vervain Verbena hastata can range in height anywhere from 2′ – 5′. It spreads slowly by rhizomes and self-sowing, making it a great choice for naturalizing areas. This plant is ideal for informal cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, and wildlife gardens.
American vervain thrives in moist soils and sun to part-shade.
